243ut Cautley

Cautley  7-12-71

Cautley was the engineer who initiated the famous Ganges canal, that runs from the river close to Haridwar, where the Engineer lived and his home [Dam Kothi] can apparently still be visited at Roorkee. The postmark Cautley/Rishikesh shows that this office was in fact a sub-office of the Rishikesh GPO, which is now under Dehra Dun HO.

The handstamp, on an item dated 7-12-71, appears to be two distinct strikes, one, two lines of Hindi, is of 280ut, which I also record from Haridwar, and the other could be of 263up, from the north of the state.
